Review - The Lords of Satyr: Nicholas

Nicholas
by Elizabeth Amber
Series: The Lords of Satyr, Book 1
Release Date: July 31, 2007
Genre: Erotic Romance
RATING: ★★1/2

HE HAD SWORN TO TAKE A PROPER WIFE.
HE HADN’T BARGAINED ON MEETING HIS MATCH.

Nicholas looks very much like what he is – the handsome, successful heir to a vineyard in Tuscany. But Nicholas is much more, for he is one of the last in an ancient line of satyr men. And the dying kind of ElseWorld wants him not only to marry, but to wed one of the king’s own daughters – a half – human, half – faerie woman unaware of her heritage. Nicholas won’t shirk his duty to produce heirs to guard his race’s legacies, but he never plans to make his bride his only lover. A satyr’s sexual hunger and sensual skills are legendary. One woman will never satisfy him.

Or so Nicholas believes until he meets Jane. As spirited as she is fey, as beautiful as she is innocent, she is nevertheless determined to make her new husband hers alone – and she’s eager for him to teach her every deliciously carnal secret he knows.

REVIEW:

I was curious about this book after I saw a few discussion threads on Shelfari about the abnormalities of the males in this series. (Two penises, really?!) While some were put off by this, me being the sick puppy that I am, I was fascinated. So my curiosity led me to buy the book used on Amazon without really researching it.

I didn’t realize it was set in the early 1800’s. Now I’ve never read historical romances and after reading this book I don’t think I would like them. The reasoning being I don’t care for the time period where women were basically slaves to their husbands. They usually had no choice in whom they marry and that was true in this book. Jane was to marry another man until Nicholas came to bargain for her hand in marriage. Jane didn’t want to marry anyone but she agreed to marry Nicholas because he seemed to be the lesser of two evils.

While reading the first halfway of the book I almost decided to stop reading it. I didn’t like the Nicholas and how when he came to Jane’s bedchamber (yes, bedchamber, again I didn’t care for the time period) for his nightly visits. He would find his release and then leave her to sleep in his own room. But I had to keep reminding myself that was how most men treated their wives in the 1800’s. I kept thinking, this doesn’t feel like a romance story to me. Their relationship was so cold at first it felt more like a business deal.

I did like Jane as the female lead. But as a reflection of the time period Jane is very naïve about what goes on between a man and woman in their bedroom. She did her best to fit in to Nicholas’ household and her role as his wife. But she was lonely since she only saw Nicholas at night for dinner and his nightly visits.

After Jane found out that Nicholas, like many man of that time and social status, had mistresses in addition to her, she was upset. After Nicholas explained to her that there are two different kinds of women, one was the type that men took as mistresses and the other were the kind they married. Jane wanted to learn how to be his mistress so that he would not go to other woman. That’s when the book started getting interesting; if you know what I mean (wiggles eye brows). After Nicholas’ teaching, they became closer and eventually fell in love with one another.

While I was not crazy about time period of the book; I liked the interesting mythological part of the plot. It gave it a paranormal feel that I’m used.

Jane has no idea that she is a mix of Faerie and Human and thinks that she is a freak. Throughout the book she is trying to find a cure for her condition. But once she and Nicholas become closer he tells her of her Faerie heritage and that of his Satyr. There is also a part to the plot that includes a group of maenads that are after the seed of one of the Satyr brothers.

Over all I felt like I would have liked it better if it was set in modern day time. I don’t know that I will continue to read this series.

Woo-Hoo! The Darkness Within Series

OMG!!! I just read some really good news on Jennifer Turner's blog about the much awaited release of Eternal Hearts. Orginally she tried to release ES in October of 2009 but ran into a few road blocks.

Bless her heart she has gone through a lot to bring it to her readers.
Anyway her agent has given her the green light to self publish the second book in the Darkness Within Series.
She self published the first book  Eternal Seduction and it was release October 31, 2008. And I've been waiting for Eternal Hearts ever since I found out she was writing it.
But now she reports that we can get our hands on it in June of this year.
Ms. Turner has also be filling her time with When Worlds Collide: Choose Your Own Adventure story that she features on her website about some of the side characters in The Darkness Within Series.

I will be doing a re-read of Eternal Seduction soon and posting my review. Stay tuned.

Woo-hoo!!

Title: Eternal Seduction (Book 1)
Author: Jennifer Turner
Release Date: October 31, 2008

Synopsis

After living on the streets of New York City for over a decade, Logan Ellis admits her perceptions might be a little skewed. But twisted or not, there's a satisfying irony in watching a well dressed vampire stand in the middle of a ghetto alley, windblown trash scraping small circles near his feet. What she finds even more intriguing, is waiting for him to decide whether or not he's going to kill her.
Kerestyan Nelek hasn't quite made up his mind. As the Lord of New York, he can't allow a homeless drug addict, whose memories are packed with knowledge of vampiric existence, to run free in his city. It's not the first time he's been in this situation with a human, it's just the first time in thousands of years he's come face to face with one who doesn't seem to care. And that's what makes the decision so damn difficult.
What horrors would you have to witness before you went numb? How many years would it take for you to feel that way? What would it take to make you care again?
Logan's answers are simple: the worst humanity has to offer, almost thirty...and something she never expected.

Release Date: May 1, 2011

Why I’m “waiting”:

Shelly Laurenston is one of my favorite authors. I love how she has a great balance between sex and humor in her books. With most series that feature a different couple in their own book, there is that one couple that you cannot wait to read about. And Dee-Ann and Ric is that couple (at least for me) in this series. Their getting together has been building for a few books now. Dee-Ann is the kick ass chick that doesn’t need anyone, let alone a man. Ric is the play-boy that has fallen for the Dee-Ann but she keeps turning him down. I just know when they finally get together there will be some HOT scenes.

What are you "Waiting on" this Wednesday?

Teaser Tuesdays

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

1.      Grab your current read
2.      Open to a random page
3.      Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
4.      BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
5.      Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My teaser for this Tuesday is:
”Don‘t leave me.” I thrash in the bed sheets.
“I‘m not, Mac.”
I know I am dreaming then, because dreams are home to the absurd and what he says next is beyond absurd.

Waiting Sucks: True Blood Season 4

Waiting for the new season of HBO's True Blood really does SUCK! I can't decide if the teasers HBO is posting is making the wait easier or harder.

From what I've seen of the teasers it seems that season four will loosely follow the plot of Dead to the World, the 4th book in the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. Just as season one, season two and sesaon three follow the corresponding books in the series.

A little back ground for those of you that might know about True Blood.
True Blood is an American television drama series created and produced by Alan Ball. True Blood is based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris, and details the co-existence of vampires and humans in Bon Temps, a fictional small Louisiana town. The series centers on Sookie Stackhouse (played by actress Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress at a bar, who falls in love with vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer).

#1 Waiting Sucks: Eric

#2 Waiting Sucks: Sam and Luna
#3 Waiting Sucks: Jason and Crystal

#4 Waiting Sucks: Bill and Eric

The latest installment of The Southern Vampire Mysteries (aka Sookie Stackhouse series), Dead Reckoning, is being released May 3, 2011.  And I've added it my Mother's Day wish list.

REVIEW: Witch Fire by Anya Bast

Witch Fire (Elemental Witches, #1)

Witch Fire (Elemental Witches #1)
by Anya Bast
Paranormal Romance
RATING: ★★★1/2

After a chaotic marriage and a rough divorce, all Mira Hoskins wants is stability and normality. But when sexy Jack McAllister enters her life, she discovers that what you want isn't always what you need.

And although she is unaware of her talent, a group of renegade witches has discovered her existence and are determined to steal her power--and her life.

Review:

This is the first book by Anya Bast I’ve read and I was pleasantly surprised. I assumed it was going to be mostly romance focused. But it

Bast’s characters and world building sucked me in and kept me interested. I couldn’t put the book down. I almost finished it in one sitting.

The main female character, Mira is trying to survive on her own after an ugly divorce from her cheating husband. She is working as a waitress trying to support herself, while trying to complete a college degree.

One night while she is at work she notices that the hot and mystery guy that she can’t take her mind off of is sitting at a table in her section. She goes to weight on him and as always he is quite and keeps his head down while reading and only ordering coffee. He has become a regular at the dinner and in her nightly fantasies.

Later that night at Mira apartment two men try to break down her door and Jack McAllistar, the hot guy from the dinner, comes to her aid. Mira passes out after she takes a blow to the head and then wakes up in a strange place…..Jack’s apartment.

Jack tells Mira about her heritage as a witch and of course she thinks he is crazy. But after he proves it to her, Jack becomes Mira’s teacher in magic and they begin to work together to figure out what her would be kidnappers want.

As Mira and Jack get closer their lust slowly becomes love in this great book by Anya Bast. I cannot wait to continue reading this series. has a great plot that I can see carry through to the end of the series.

Awesome News for Lara Adrian Fans

I was reading Adrian's Newsletter and thought I'd share.

THE BIG NEWS!

Hi again. It's me, Lara, back with the exciting news I promised at the top of this newsletter. :)
I've been saying for a while that I am having an absolute blast writing the Midnight Breed series, and that I hoped to continue with it beyond the initial 10-book story arc. Well . . . I am delighted to announce that my publisher has recently given me the green light for the next two books in the series! Woo-hoo!!!
And as if that weren't exciting enough news, Bantam Dell is also promoting me to hardcover beginning with Chase's book, Darker After Midnight! This is a huge vote of confidence from my publisher, and I have to admit, it's a little surreal (okay, terrifying!) for me to realize that my series is going to be sharing shelf space with other hardcover releases from superstar authors like Nora Roberts, JR Ward, Christine Feehan, etc. But my publisher believes the series is ready to reach a larger audience, and none of this would be possible without you--my amazing readers--who've embraced the Midnight Breed so enthusiastically since it debuted in 2007. So, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you. I remain humbled and grateful for all your incredible support and friendship. I'm absolutely blown away!

Now, for the practical details as I know them so far: Right now, I haven't been given a firm release date for Darker After Midnight. The switch to hardcover means Bantam Dell will need a bit more prep/packaging time on the finished manuscript, so it's doubtful the book will be ready for a Fall 2011 U.S. release as we were originally told (I've heard February 2012 mentioned, but again, nothing is firm at the moment). Ebook versions will release at the same time as the hardcover, and be available on all digital formats. I assume the U.S. audiobook will release in tandem as well. My publisher assures me that the mass market paperback edition will follow as soon as possible after the hardcover release, most likely around six months afterward.

That's all I know at this point; details are still being hammered out and as soon as we have more information, we'll update my website, Facebook, etc., with any further news.
I can't even tell you how happy I am that I get to continue playing in this story world. It's been my goal from the beginning to make each book different and hopefully better than the last. That's certainly my challenge going forward, and I hope you enjoy all the twists and surprises--and romance--yet to come!

I cannot wait for Hunter's book, Deeper Than Midnight. I pre-ordered it a couple of months ago.
Here's a little summary from Adrain's website for those that are not fimilar with the Midnight Breed series. If you have not read this series I highly recommend it.

Review: River Marked by Patricia Briggs

River Marked
by Patricia Briggs
(Mercy Thompson #6)

Car mechanic Mercy Thompson has always known there was something different about her, and not just the way she can make a VW engine sit up and beg. Mercy is a shapeshifter, a talent she inherited from her long-gone father. She's never known any others of her kind. Until now.
An evil is stirring in the depths of the Columbia River-one that her father's people may know something about. And to have any hope of surviving, Mercy and her mate, the Alpha werewolf Adam, will need their help...

River Marked has different feel to it than the previous Mercy Thompson books. In this installment you get to see more of the relationship between Mercy and Adam as well as get a peek into Mercy's heritage.

The book starts off a few weeks after Silver Borne ended. Mercy is living with Adam in his house. We haven't seen Stefan since the devastating events of Bone Crossed. So while Adam is out of town on business Mercy decides to check in on Stefan and bring him as her date Warren and Kyle's for their weekly bad movie date. Mercy is shocked at the condition that Stefan and is household is in. With the help of Warren and another one of the pack's wolves, Ben, they work on getting Stefan back to his old stuff.

As Mercy and Adam's wedding date gets closer and Mercy's mom is driving her crazy with the planning. Mercy asks Adam if they can elope. After he agrees, Mercy gets a surprise and finds herself at a surprise wedding that Adam's daughter Jesse and Mercy's mom put together at the last minute. After the wedding Adam takes Mercy on a surprise honeymoon.
But it's no regular honeymoon. After all this is Mercy we're talking about. Mercy doesn't have to go looking for trouble it just finds her. And what's a Mercy book without a good mystery and danger?

After a few days of honeymoon bliss (and in my opinion, tons of missed opportunities for the readers to get some smoking scenes from Adam and Mercy, shame on your Ms. Briggs) the mystery part of the books begins and we are introduced to some new characters and get some background on Mercy's father.
So to skip over the main plot of the book so not to give away any spoilers there is danger, bloodshed, death, and a few broken bones. But in the end the big bad is brought down by none other than Mercy our loveable Volkswagen mechanic.

I found this installation in the series to be a little slow at times but if you are a Mercy fan you will enjoy this book.

Lion’s Heat Review

Title: Lion’s Heat
Author: Lora Leigh
Series: Breeds #21
Published: April 6, 2010
Genre: Paranormal Erotic Romance
Rating: ★★★★

The mating urge cannot be ignored...
Bad boy Jonas Wyatt knows it is fate that Rachel becomes his mate. He can sense it. He can also sense her reluctance. But she has little power over the mating heat of the Breeds. It is Jonas's destiny to claim her. And nothing will stop him from having his way.

Review:
Jonas Wyatt has been a big character throughout the series and after 20 books and short stories, we FINALLY get his story. And fans of this series will not be disappointed.
Jonas Wyatt is a master manipulator and the arrogant Director of the Bureau of Breed Affairs. And he has played a calculating cupid to many of the Breeds by sticking his nose where it does not belong. But there is a method to his games and how he has moves people around like chess pieces on a board.
When it comes to the mating, he is fast to tell others that it is nonsense and tells the male Breeds that they need to keep their mates in check. Many have commented to him that they cannot wait for the day that he meets his mate so that he knows what they are going through.
And like most of the characters in the series I knew that once Jonas met his mate he would be a goner just like the others before him.
Of course a woman that would be Jonas’ mate would have to appear cold and calculating as him in order to put up with him. And his assist Rachel Broen fits that description to a T. She is the only one that can go face to face with Jonas and live to walk away.
One thing I really like about this installment in the series is that the guy and gal have known each other for a while before they fall into each other’s arms. It’s not a love at first site. Ok it was lust at first site and then it grew into love and then a mating.
Another thing I like about this book is that it has a lot of plot to it and answers some questions that have been brought up in earlier books in the series and yet it leaves us with a few more questions that need answers. Like what will happen to Rachel’s baby later on after she grows up.
I would have to say this is one of my favorites in the series and cannot wait to continue reading this series.
WARNING: If you have not read any of Lora Leigh’s books be warned. They have very hot and explicit love scenes. (Wiggles eye brows)

For reading order check out Lora Leigh’s website:

SUPERSIZED TUESDAY

Is it Tuesday yet?! Two great authors have new releases this Tuesday and I can't wait to get my hands on both books. The hard question is which will I start 1st?

Lone Star Lovers: Breaking Leather

Breaking Leather
by Delilah Devlin
Lone Star Lover (Book 4)
Contemporary Western, Ménage a trios or more
RATING: ★★★

One for remembrance…one for healing…and one to seal her heart forever. Lone Star Lovers, Book 4 Chrissi Page has tried to find one man who heats her bed the way the Kinzie brothers did one shameful night years ago. She’s failed miserably, leaving her with no choice but to bank that inner fire—and keep a lid on her inner bad girl. She’d been weak, unable to choose between three men who appealed to her in different ways. And when they’d confronted her as a tease, anger had boiled over into a passion so wild, she’s still trying to live it down. Since that night, Ezra, Cade and Joshua have individually sown their wild oats with pretty much the entire available female population of Two Mule, Texas. Yet nothing erases the attraction they still feel for Chrissi. And when she ends up stranded on the road near their ranch, it’s their last chance to turn their mutual obsession into an unusual proposition. One weekend, three on one. If she can’t stand the heat, they’ll let her go on with her life. And try to find a way to live with the hole she’ll leave behind in theirs.

Warning: A girl who thinks she can’t have it all, and three brothers who set out to prove otherwise. One on one, two on one, and three on one; bondage in the wild; a bit of riding crop action. And a pickup truck load of emotion.

Review:

The series is set in the small town of Two Mule, Texas and in this installment we get to read about 3 naughty rancher brothers that are in love with the same gal, Chrissi. None of them can forget the one night they all spent together years ago.

Chrissi is a realtor and is showing a house on the neighboring ranch to the Kinzie ranch, when she is suck on the side of the road after her car breaks down. She hopes that she can get help without seeing any of the Kinzie brothers. But she not so lucky when Ezra Kinzie , the oldest brother and her ex from high school, pulls up in his pick-up truck in order to offer her a ride to his ranch so she can use the phone.

Little does Chrissi know, that her car breaking down is no surprise to the three brothers. It's only part one to their clever plan to "kidnap" her for the weekend to make her face that they all could have a happily ever after living together.

After a very hot and satisfied weekend with the brothers, Chrissi and brothers finally comes to terms with love for each other and makes plans for their life together as one big happy, sweaty family.

Delilah Devlin writes some of the hottest ménage stories… I highly recommend this book.
